CARD: MANDAN BUFFALO DANCER
4 x 6
A buffalo dancer of the Mandan, a North Dakota tribe brought to the verge of extinction by smallpox in 1838, he wears a crazy buffalo headdress with a long eagle wing spike feather hanging down, and red paint representing buffalo ribs. The dance of the Buffalo was part of the annual Okipa ceremony, a celebration of life and fertility, sacrifice and thanksgiving. This man exudes grace and spiritual intention.
Based on an original 10 x 8 oil on board by Cathy Smith.
