NAVAJO TRANSITIONAL BLANKET
Early Transitional blanket, with some repairable damage to the selvedge, which the price reflects.
The Transitional period (1890-1910) in Navajo weaving was a time of many changes. The Navajo were permitted to return to their beloved red dessert nestled between the four sacred mountains. Government appointed Traders began setting up posts in the remote areas of the reservation to supply goods, and to personally promote weaving. Items sold at the trading post exposed the Navajo to a great new palette of ideas, designs, and patterns as found on sacks, catalogs, and photos. It was with the changes to wool, newly available dyes, and the transition from wearing blankets to floor rugs; that gave way to this “transitional” period and thus, Transitional Rugs were born.
